ORGANOPHOSPHATE SPILL/MAJOR MCI

 TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

WHAT would we do if we had a large number of patients accidentally or intentionally exposed to organophosphates?

Is our area vulnerable to organophosphate exposure – either from agricultural use of pesticides or by transportation of chemicals on our freeways, railways, or roads?

If we needed a significant amount of pharmaceutical intervention for a large-scale event, where would we get it???

If we needed resources from a CHEMPACK* for an event in our County, HOW would we get it, and WHO would be participating in the response?

• Fire:  First Responders; scene management; HAZMAT; Decon
• EMS:  Patient Assessment, Treatment, and Transport
• Hospital personnel:  Receipt of Decontaminated and Contaminated (self-dispatched) patients.  May need to set up your Decon equipment!
• Public Health:  Oversight of County or Regional CHEMPACK Mutual Aid Plan(s)
• Law Enforcement:  Transport of Materials; scene security
• OES:  Notification to Cal EMA; potential EOC operations

*CHEMPACK:  Cache of pharmaceutical antidotes for treatment of patients exposed to nerve agents
